This church is the result of the split in 1984 (cf. no. 5). The reason was tension between the Mexican leaders and the missionaries of the Christian Reformed Church (CRCNA). While the majority decided to maintain cooperation with the CRCNA, three of the five presbyteries of the Independent Presbyterian opted for independence. They were registered with the Mexican government as the Independent Presbyterian Church and also obtained control of the property, including the site of Juan Calvino Theological Seminary II (Mexico).
