This church was founded by Swiss missionaries, especially Paul Berthoud (1847-1930). Before his arrival in 1887, Josefa Mhalamhala preached the Gospel he had enountered through missionaries in South Africa. In the early period the church was working in the two southern provinces of Maputo and Gaza, but today it is also spreading to the rest of the country. Beginning in 1948 the church became autonomous in several stages. The founder of the Liberation Front of Moçambique (FRELIMO), Eduardo Chivambo Mondlane, was raised in the Presbyterian Church. In 1972 the first Synod president, Zedekias Manganhela, together with other members of the church, was arrested by the Portuguese authorities; he died in prison as a consequence of torture.
