The church goes back to work done by Edwin Richards, who was sent to Mozambique in 1880 by the American Board of Commissioners for Foreign Missions (Congreg). Since this mission decided to close the work, most members followed Richards in joining the Meth Church. A small group maintained the Congreg tradition. Today the church is active in the Inhambane, Gaza, and Maputo provinces. (cf. South Africa: United Congregational Church of Southern Africa).
