Mission work by the Dutch Reformed Church in South Africa started in Great Namaqualand in the 1880s. The first congregation was established in 1898. In subsequent decades the church grew. It is autonomous but essentially one with the Dutch Reformed Church in South Africa (see South Africa no. 1). There is the hope that the church will achieve unity with the Uniting Reformed Church in South Africa.
