In 1947 the decision to join the Evangelical Presb Church had to be taken individually by the congreg communities. While the majority opted for the union, some decided to maintain their independence. They hold to the 28 Articles of the Christian Faith. The Congregationalist Union has its headquarters in Lisbon. There are presently some 20 churches and missions, including several preaching stations in the areas of Portalegre and Santarém.
