The first Prot community came into existence in the 1950s. From time to time the French military chaplain stationed in Tananarive held services on the island. In 1976 the community was transformed into a church (Eglise Protestante de la Réunion), and in 1992 a church sanctuary was built. The pastors serving the congr in St. Denis are sent by the Fédération Protestante de France. The congr brings together people of different cultural backgrounds: Créoles, French, and especially immigrants from Madagascar.
