The first Ref Church with Russian members was established in Tula in 1632. The church was founded by Dutch and French immigrants who came to work with a Dutch iron producer and merchant, Andrew Vinius. To confess Calvinism at that timein Russia was considered a crime. In 1714 Thomas Ivanov, a surgeon in the Moscow Infantry Regiment, was executed for publicly preaching Ref convictions. Foreigners were allowed to practice their faith, but the Russian Ref church had to operate underground. In Tula many educated merchants were members of the Ref Church. Under the Communist regime many Ref suffered martyrdom. The Ref Church was reconstituted in 1992 and officially registered in 1994 as the Reformed Fundamental Church. Apart from this community there continue to be underground Ref communities which do not trust the democratic changes in Russia. The community in Tula confesses a strict form of Calvinism. Only members of the church participate in communion.
