This church grew out of the work of Swiss missionaries who began their activities in 1875 among the Tsonga people. It was formerly called the Tsonga Presbyterian Church. A network of mission stations was established in the northern and eastern parts of Transvaal. The rapid growth of mining industry drew many people into the towns. Congregations were also established in Pretoria, Reef, and later Welkom areas (Orange Free State), and also in Zululand. The church has a strong ethnic character. Tsonga is the official language, both in worship and the courts of the church. Since 1962 the church has been independent but not yet self-sufficient. Gradually, a new sense of autonomy is pervading the church. It finds expression in the revival of liturgy and African music, as well as in the acceptance of greater social and political involvement in the life of the country.
