The Church of England in South Africa has its historical roots in the Angl tradition but is Ref in its theology and teaching. The church originated in services held in Cape Town in 1795. In the early 19th century tensions arose in the Angl Church between Evangelical ministers in the church and the newly appointed Tractarian bishop Robert Gray. As a result a number of congregations remained aloof from Gray’s leadership, and when in 1870 Gray formed the Church of the Province of South Africa, the dissenting congregations remained as the Church of England in South Africa, holding to the Ref faith of the church as set out in the 39 Articles of 1563, and rejecting the innovations, doctrine, vestments, and ritual. Later in the 19th century it “inherited” the mission work among the Zulus initiated by Bishop John William Colenso (1814-1883).In 1938 the churches which remained faithful to the principles of the Church of England in South Africa adopted a constitution defining themselves as a “Ref and Protestant Church ... adhering to the faith and doctrine of the Church of England ... embodied in the 39 Articles of Religion, and the Book of Common Prayer of 1662.” In 1955 Fred Morris, formerly bishop of North Africa, became the bishop of the church.

Present day Situation:

CESA sees its mandate as reaching the people in South Africa with the good news of Jesus Christ. From a small and scattered group of Christians in 1938 we now have congregations among all the different ethnic groups of South Africa. Our work stretches into Namibia, Malawi and Zimbabwe. Mission teams regularly visit Mozambique.

In addition to the task of evangelism and church growth, we have established thirteen schools and pre-schools throughout the country. A community centre has been established in the huge township of Khayelitsha outside Cape Town. A remarkable ministry of compassion has been developed in KwaZulu Natal and Free State where AIDS centres for babies with HIV have been established. In the Hillbrow suburb of Johannesburg, a Shelter for Homeless Men and a Christian Care Centre for street children have been established.

Contents of internet: history of CESA; theological standpoint, current activities; vision for future, CESA Theological training college; local church web pages; ministers\' directory and denominational Constitution.
