After some initial work by the London Missionary Society (1804-1810), American Congreg started missionary work on the Jaffna peninsula in 1816. They engaged in educational and medical work and since 1841 published the journal The Morning Star. Until the Second World War the church was confined to the area of the Jaffna peninsula in the extreme north of the country; later it began to expand to other areas, especially the eastern part of the country. In 1947 the church became part of the Church of South India. The church has spread primarily among the Tamil people. In the seventies the church participated in union negotiations. The ethnic strife in Sri Lanka has led to increasing estrangement among the churches. During the years of conflict the church went through many difficulties. Since 1983 many members have migrated to foreign countries.
