When Sweden adopted Lutheranism as the state religion, no freedom was granted either to RCath or to “those who share the mistakes of Zwingli and Calvin” (Synod of Upsal 1593). When, in the 1640s, King Gustav Adolph badly needed skilled craftsmen to set up a powerful army, he hired them from the Walloon Province of the Netherlands. These Ref workers came under the condition that they be allowed to bring along their own ministers. Their ministers were paid by Louis de Geer, the rich steel magnate from Li?ge. The Walloon Period (1640-1696) was followed by the Anglo-British era (1696-1741) when French Huguenots sought refuge in Sweden from King Louis XIV’s persecutions of the Prot. They worshiped, together with the Presb, at the residence of the British Ambassador. A third period, the socalled French Period, saw King Frederic I of Hessen-Cassel, a Ref churchman himself, granting the right of public worship to the Ref community. In 1751 the first Ref church was inaugurated. Since 1796 the Ref pastors have had the same “status” as their Luth colleagues. Over the decades the French Reformed Church lost a sizeable part of its membership through naturalization of the old Ref families. Today the church is heavily involved in social work and asylum issues. It also houses a small French-speaking school.
