Christianity entered the kingdom of Bolaang Mongondow, situated west of the Minahasa, in the 17th century, at about the same time as Islam. However, during the 18th and 19th century no attention was given to this region, and by 1900 the majority of the population had entered Islam. In 1904 the Muslim king requested the mission to establish schools in his territory. At the same time Christians from the densely populated Sangir islands and the Minahasa immigrated to Bolaang Mongondow. In 1970 about 80% of GMIBM members consisted of immigrants and their descendants. The church became independent in 1950. Between 1958 and 1961 the GMIBM, like its sister churches in North and Central Sulawesi, suffered from a revolt against the central government (PERMESTA). The church is active in the field of education and health care and publishes a monthly magazine, Bulletin GMIBM. It considers June 28, 1950, as its date of birth.
