Prior to World War II, several teachers already practiced Ref teaching as it was done in the West. Due to political pressure they had also joined the Kyodan in 1941. After the War, when religious freedom was proclaimed, they decided to form a separate church. The church was constituted in Tokyo in 1946. At that time the group had nine teachers and three elders. In 1950 the Synod of the Christian Reformed Church in North America (cf. United States no. 11) accepted the request of the Reformed Church in Japan to send missionaries. The denomination has grown steadily throughout the years.
