Cumberland Presb missionaries (cf. United States) began to work in Japan in 1873. J. B. Hall, the first among them, was active in Osaka and Wakayama. The congrs which were established at that time formed the Union Church of Christ in Japan (Nihon Kirisuto Itchi Kyokai) in 1889. After World War II Pastor Yoshizaki Tadao, a pastor of the Kyodan (cf. no. 1), joined the Cumberland Church with his congr; in the course of subsequent years other congrs followed.
