Though the Dutch conquered Aruba in 1636, they settled there much later. In the 18th century no regular church life developed. In 1816 the total population of Aruba was 1732 persons, 564 Indians included. Among them were 279 Reformed. In 1822 the Protestant Church of Aruba was established. In 1825 Luth and Reformed united in this church. Usually Reformed ministers from Curaçao visited Aruba a few times every year. In 1858 the first fulltime minister started his service on the island. At that time the United Church of Curaçao regarded the church in Aruba as independent. Sermons were also preached in Papiamento. As the church grew, a second minister was appointed in 1947, and in 1969 a third followed. In the years from 1949 to 1953 members of the GKN tried to establish a Reformed church but finally abandoned the project. In 1968 the three congr in Aruba had 1,268 members.
