The historical data about early religious activities are scarce. In 1816, 64 Dutch Reformed and 27 Luth were reported to live on the island. The first worship service took place in 1843, the first church was built in 1847, and the first minister was ordained in 1860. Church records report that on Bonaire the discriminatory practice of the NHK, not to baptize slave children, was ignored. In the absence of resident pastors lay people read sermons approved by the NHK. In 1934 a second church was built. In 1968 there were 215 members in two congr. Church services are held not only in Dutch but also in English and Papiamento.
