The EENCIL is a direct fruit of the LMS and the SMP; it became independent in 1962. Since 1979 the church has supported the Kanak people, their rights and their wish for independence. All of its pastors are Kanak except for two European pastors sent by CEVAA: one of them teaches at the church’s own Pastoral School of Béthanie (on the island of Lifou), while the other serves the congregation of the “Vieux Temple,” the only multi-ethnic parish of the EENCIL.
