The Evangelical Free Church split from the EENCIL in 1957. It was created by a former missionary of the SMP, Raymond Charlemagne, who had been deeply involved in the teaching and the moral instruction of the Kanak people. The SMP requested him to return to France. But numerous teachers supported him and asked him to stay. This incident created a split within the Prot population and provoked the foundation of the Evangelical Free Church. Since 1992 the church has launched a reconciliation process with the EENCIL.
