The destructive earthquake of 1972 that devastated Managua, the capital city, and killed 10,000 persons, leaving 300,000 homeless, prompted immediate assistance from the Christian Reformed world diaconate agency from North America. This included nurses, community development, medical assistance, builders, literature, and literacy aid. Soon spiritual guidance was provided by two Mexican evangelists from the Christian Reformed Church of Mexico City. The first regular missionary was sent in 1975. Few missionaries have served there, and most for only brief periods, because of the unstable political situation. At present one missionary cooperates with the national church. Some of the areas where church groups are present include: Managua, Tipitapa, Muy Muy, Chinandega, El Tamarindo, and Nagarote.
