"The PCN began with the enthusiasm of freed slaves in Jamaica." Following the abolition of the slave trade Jamaican missionaries were sent to Nigeria by the Churchof Scotland. Missionary work began in 1846 in Calabar (Duke Town and Creek Town). In the following year another group of missionaries arrived and opened a second station in Calabar (Old Town). From Calabar the church spread to Upper Cross River. In 1888 work was started in Unwana, in 1904 in Arochukwu, and so on. In the more recent past the church also began to be present in other parts of Nigeria. The church gained autonomy in 1954.
