The origins of this church go back to 1916. It came into existence through missionary efforts of the Sudan United Mission (SUM) — South Africa Branch. The first missionary establishment was at Keana, Plateau State, but the church has expanded into Southern Zaria, Southern Plateau State, the eastern part of Kwara State, Niger State, and Akwa Ibom State. In the course of its history the name of the church has been modified; it was first called Church of Christ in Nigeria, later Church of Christ in Central Nigeria; the present name was recently adopted. In 1972/73 the South African missionaries were expelled. The church has grown considerably in the last two decades.
