The church has its roots in the Christian Reformed Church in Nigeria (cf. no. 3). In 1973 a split occurred and the Reformed Church of Christ was established. It consists mainly of people of the Kuteb tribe. The church is self-governing, self-supporting, and self-propagating.In 1993 the church decided to change the name from Church of Christ in Nigeria (COCIN) to Reformed Church of Christ in Nigeria (RCCN). Since 1973 the church has grown rapidly.
