The beginnings of this church owe to missionary work of the Sudan Interior Mission (SIM), which established a station in Kukar Gadu in the Borno province near the border with the Bauchi province in 1935. The SIM strategy was to start mission centers in each of the four non-Muslim ethnic communities of the area: the Kare-Kare, Bade, Ngamo, and Ngizim. Stations were opened in Gashua among the Bade (1938), in Gadaka among the Ngamo (1951), and in Garin Maje among the Ngamo and Ngizim (1952). In 1954 the SIM congregations were organized into the Association of Evangelical Churches of West Africa. The church grew quicklyin the following years. A church was opened in Maiduguri, the capital of North-East State. The church also spread to other parts of Borno state: Biu, Buni Yadi, Kukawa, and Hildi.
