Plateau State Nigeria (Afrika) AdressNr.: 1437 / 1159
The history of this church goes back to the vision of Charles Kumm (1874), a German, who initiated the Sudan United Mission, an effort to bring the Gospel to the black people of the interior of Africa (the term Sudan does not refer to today’s Republic of Sudan but has the meaning “black people”). Missionary work was started by the British branch of the SUM in Borno province among the Kanuri, a Muslim tribe. In 1936 a leper station was established in Molai. Of special importance for later developments was the opening of a bookshop in Maiduguri. Special emphasis was laid on post-primary schools. Christian communities could be formed in the urban centers. In 1966 the Church of Christ in Nigeria was formed. While growth was rather slow in the first decades, the church has rapidly expanded since then.
