The church was established in 1881 by a group of independent congregations which originated from the Afscheiding and were influenced by Methodism and the Revival Movement. Like the Christian Reformed Church (cf. no. 3) it objected to liberal theology and to state influence on the life of the church, but it did not seek to collaborate with this church because it rejected Reformed confessionalism. In 1993 ten congregations left the VEG. They became independent. The VEG maintains fraternal relations with evangelical congregations in several European countries and belongs to the IFFEC. Its seminary is affiliated with Faculty of Utrecht, and the church has officially agreed to collaborate with the NHK (cf. no. 1) and GKN (cf. no. 5).
