The first congr of this church was formed in 1894 in Negreiros, Lima. In 1919 the regional synod of Central Peru decided to name the church, nine communities at that time, the Evangelical Church of Peru. The church has always placed strong emphasis on national leadership. The church was formally constituted in 1946. Since the crisis in the early ’50s (see above) it has grown rapidly and is now represented in the whole country. About 80% of the congr are to be found in the Andine highlands. In the 1980s the church actively engaged in the human rights struggle.
