The UCCP is the result of an organic union of three Philippine Prot churches, i.e., the United Evangelical Church in the Philippines, the Evangelical Church in the Philippines, and the Philippine Meth Church, plus a few independent congr in 1948. In 1929 the United Evangelical Church in the Philippines brought together Presb, Congreg, and United Brethren. The Disciples from South Luzon joined the United Church in 1962. The UCCP is self-governing, self-propagating, and well on its way to being self-reliant.The church is a strong advocate for justice and peace in the Philippines. It has been in the forefront in fighting for the protection of human rights under successive regimes, including the present regime of Fidel Ramos, himself a member of the UCCP. The church runs 18 high schools and colleges and four hospitals. The most prominent educational institution is Silliman University in Dumaguete City in Central Visayas, founded by Presb missionaries in 1901.
