Inspired by the sense of independence of the Filipino clergymen and lay leaders, who founded the Iglesia Evangélica de los Cristianos Filipinos in 1906, representatives of 13 evangelical churches met in Manila at the invitation of Don Toribio Teodoro and started the groundwork for a church union in November 1931. However, of the 13 churches, only six evangelical and independent churches of different denominational backgrounds and traditions such as Presb, Reformed, and the Iglesia Evangélica de los Cristianos eventually united to form what is now known as the United Evangelical Church of Christ (January 3, 1932). All these churches had earlier affirmed their independence and selfhood from foreign mission boards and missionaries. The church has since grown considerably. More and more it focuses on the economic and social needs of the community.
