CMA missionary work in the Philippines started in 1901 in the Western Mindanao and the Sulu regions. The first church was inaugurated in Tetuan Zamboanga region on December 25, 1904. Growth was slow, and by 1924 the missionaries were so discouraged that they were on the point of abandoning the Philippines. But an effort to recruit indigenous leadership was successful, and the church began to grow. During World War II missionaries either went into hiding or were detained in Japanese camps. Leadership had to be exercised by national workers. In 1947 the denomination was officially established. Thirteen of the 42 congregations were self-supporting at that time. Two years later a constitution was adopted. In 1982 the church officially decided to be present, not only in Mindanao, but in the whole of the Philippines. In recent years the church has grown rapidly. The number of congregations increased from 1,537 in 1990 to 2,167 in 1997. The church is active in educational work. Very early on the church also began to take responsibility for mission work abroad.
