Several congr which in 1834 or thereafter (Pastor L. G. C. Ledeboer, 1841) separated from the NHK joined neither the CGKN (cf. no. 3) nor the GKN (cf. no. 5) but remained independent and were called the “Ledeboeriaanse gemeenten (Ledeboer Congregations)” or “Reformed Congregations under the Cross.” In 1907 Rev. G. H. Kersten (1892-1948) succeeded in uniting 35 of these independent congregations into the GG. From the beginning this church had a close connection with the Netherlands Reformed Congregations in the USA (cf. United States no. 27). It also has links with a congregation in St. Catharines, Ontario, Canada. The GG emphasizes the need for experiencing conversion and heartfelt piety (cf. nos. 7, 9, 11). Its spirituality is less rational and activist than that of the GKN (cf. no. 5) and parts of the CGKN (cf. no. 3). The GG has its own theological seminary in Rotterdam. In 1953 a teacher of this seminary caused a split in the church (cf. no. 9). The GG did missionary work in Indonesia, Nigeria, and South Africa. It was involved in the establishment of the Gereja Jemaat Protestan di Irian Jaya (GJPI; cf. Indonesia no. 5) and of the Nigeria Reformed Church among the Izi (cf. Nigeria no. 7).
