The Reformed Presbyterian Church of Scotland was a continuation of the Church of Scotland by those in that church (the Covenanters) who saw the Revolution Settlement of 1690 as an Erastian imposition which did not recognize the divine right of Presb church government. The first presbytery meeting was held in 1743, when Rev. John McMillan was joined by another minister. The church grew rapidly during the 18th century but declined after 1863, when the vast majority united with the Free Church of Scotland. During the 20th century the number of congregations has dwindled to the present four, three of which are pastored by Irish ministers.
