The Welsh Independent or Congregational Churches stand in the Puritan and Non-conformist tradition. It was the conviction of the churches’ founders that the Prot Reformation, which had taken a political turn in England, fell short of the reformation called for in the Scriptures. The Union of Welsh Independents, founded in 1872, is a voluntary association of Welsh Congreg churches and individual members. The preservation of the distinctive language and culture of Wales, which have been much influenced by Christianity, continues to be a major concern of the Union. "The Union is a free and voluntary body. Its aim is to help, as far as possible, to make churches followships that will be free to serve Jesus Christ." R. Tudur Jones
