Rooted in the historical setting of Presb immigrants from Scotland in the 17th century, the Evangelical Presbyterian Church in Ireland (EPCI) emerged from the Presbyterian Church in Ireland (cf. no. 1) in 1927. At that time liberal theology dominated the teaching in the Theological College responsible for training most of the ministers in PCI. A heresy trial involving one of the professors resulted, but he was acquitted on five clearly substantiated charges. When the General Assembly instituted measures to discipline those who continued to call the church back to the Word of God, there was a spontaneous uncoordinated separation from PCI by many members of evangelical persuasion throughout Northern Ireland. The result was the formation of The Irish Evangelical Church, later to be renamed The Evangelical Presbyterian Church. The church began without any church buildings or manses and with only two ordained ministers, and has grown steadily throughout its 70-year history. It has 11 congr in Northern Ireland, one in the Republic of Ireland, and one in England.
