 This church came into existence through a secession of congr which felt that the Irish Presbyterian Church had abandoned true Ref teaching. From its beginnings in 1951, the driving force was Dr. Ian R. K. Paisley, a leading figure of the loyalist movement in Northern Ireland. The first congr was Crossgar, County Down, soon joined by a congr in Ravenhill which had seceded from the Irish Presbyterian Church. The church spread in subsequent years to all counties of Northern Ireland. It places strong emphasis on doctrinal standards and evangelism, and it is fiercely opposed to all ecumenical efforts. The church has worldwide connections with Free Presbyterian Churches and is responsible for mission work in Kenya.
