The policy of the German government was to admit only German missionaries to their colonial territories. After some negotiation, the English Bapt withdrew from the Cameroon and concentrated their efforts on the Congo, where they also had a mission field. The Basel Mission was requested to take their place in 1885 and soon sent a first team of four missionaries to the country. In 1890 German Pallotin Fathers were also permitted to start work in Cameroon. The Basel Mission introduced church discipline and infant baptism to the church. Since Christians in Duala and Victoria were mainly Bapt, they revolted against these innovations and, since the Basel Mission was unwilling to change its policy, a split occurred which resulted in the formation of the Native Baptist Church in 1889, a church which remained in subsequent years independent from white influence. By World War I the Basel Mission had opened 22 mission stations. Much emphasis was placed on educational work and on health care and agriculture.
In 1914 all German missionaries were forced to leave the country. Africans continued the work. When the Basel Mission returned after the War (1925), it was confined to the British-controlled part of Cameroon. The disturbances of World War II led to the recognition that leadership had to be handed over. In 1957 the Presbyterian Church in Cameroon was constituted. Fraternal relations between the Basel mission and the church continued in relation to schools, hospitals, health centers, and agricultural institutions. In 1968 the schools were handed over. The Church sees its priority in evangelizing the area. There are several movements such as the Christian Women’s Fellowship, the Christian Men’s Fellowship, and the Christian Youth Fellowship. Lay training has been intensified. Among the Africans who gave leadership to the Church the following stand out: Esoka Diso, Abraham Ngole, Aaron Su, and Jeremiah Chi Kangsen.
