In 1970 negotiations were initiated among several Protestant groups which led to the establishment, in 1972, of the Protestant Church of Algeria. One of the main reasons for the initiative was the microscopic size of the various groups. Today, this small but dynamic church is established throughout the northern coastal region and counts among its membership Christians representing about 30 different nationalities from all continents and from 25 different Prot traditions. Although half a dozen languages are most commonly used, there are at least twice as many spoken within the community. The Protestant Church of Algeria is committed to ecumenical cooperation, and many of its activities — pastoral, charitable, and ad-ministrative — are jointly carried out with RCath. Responsibility for the work of the Bible Society lies with an ecumenical group.
