In 1880 the ABCFM (Congr) started work in Sailundo and began to evangelize the central highlands. It was joined by the Congregational Foreign Missionary Society of North America. In the 1950s the congr which had come into existence through their efforts in the Umbundu-speaking region founded the Council of Evangelical Churches in Central Angola (CIEAC). During the period of wars for independence, Prot were mistrusted by the colonial authorities. All foreign missionaries were forced to leave the country. In the conflict following independence the church divided. One group followed the rebels who went underground; the other established itself as the Evangelical Congregationalist Church in the People’s Republic of Angola with headquarters in Huambo. The two groups maintained contact and, from the outsest of the peace process, the church leaders sought to integrate the two groups within one church. This goal was finally realized in December 1996. The church is a founding member of CICA.
