The Synod is the administrative body for some sixty Arabic-speaking churches and centers in Syria and Lebanon who share the Evangelical faith and have adopted Ref teaching and Presb order. The Synod was organized in 1920 as a union of several presbyteries. In 1959 it assumed responsibility for the direction of almost all work of former mission bodies from the USA, France, Denmark, Holland, and Switzerland. The congr are found in the Fertile Crescent, between the Mediterranean and the Tigris and Euphrates rivers. After steady growth over the years the Synod more recently experienced continuous emigration of large numbers of Evangelicals to the USA and to Australia. During the civil war in Lebanon many church buildings were destroyed or heavily damaged. The Synod carries a large educational ministry with some 20 schools and kindergartens as well as a hospital.
