This church originated from the missionary work of the United Presbyterian Church (Scotland) among white settlers, especially the soldiers of the Scottish regiments stationed in Cape Town in the early 19th century. The first church was opened in 1829. As the British settlement grew, congregations were founded in other parts of South Africa as well. In 1897 the mission stations of the United Presbyterian Church were consolidated into a denomination. Today the church has congregations throughout South Africa, Zambia, and Zimbabwe. About two-thirds of of the membership are white; the remainder are mainly black, though there is a small, but growing work among the Indian community and among the colored people. The church is strong in urban areas.
