Congregationalism took root in Southern Africa when Johannes van der Kemp, a missionary of the LMS, arrived in Cape Town in 1799. He was the first missionary to take the Gospel to the Bantu-speaking people in Southern Africa. The first Congreg churches were founded at Graaff-Reinet in 1801 and at Bethelsdorp (Port Elizabeth) in 1802. Within a few years the LMS was moving north from its famous mission station at Kuruman. Robert Moffat, David Livingstone, and other pioneers brought the Gospel to almost every part of Southern Africa. In order to pursue its evangelistic thrust into the interior, the LMS withdrew from the Cape in 1854. Five years later the congregations it had founded, together with a number of English-speaking congregations in larger centers, formed the Evangelical Voluntary Union, which became the Congregational Union of South Africa in 1877. At the invitation of the LMS, the American Board of Commissioners for Foreign Mission sent their first group of missionaries to South Africa in 1835. They worked among the Zulu people in Natal and the Batswa people in Mozambique, and the congregations they established eventually constituted themselves into the Bantu Congregational Church. For more than a century the three churches of congregational origin, while having close fraternal relations, operated as separated denominations. In 1967, the three strands of Congregationalism came together to form the United Congregational Church of Southern Africa. In 1972 the South African Association of the Disciples also merged with the United Congregational Church. Union talks are proceeding with the Angl, Meth, and Presb Churches. The UCCSA operates in South Africa, Botswana, Mozambique, Namibia, and Zimbabwe.
