Buol Toli-Toli, in the northern arm of Sulawesi, was Islamicized in the 16th to 18th centuries. In the 19th century European and Indonesian (mostly Minahasan) Christians immigrated into the area. They were visited by Minahasan ministers of the established Protestant Church (GPI). In 1937 the region was transferred to the Minahasan Church (GMIM). Attempts by the GPI and the GMIM to bring the Gospel to the indigenous population failed, so that the church still consists of people who came from other parts of Indonesia. Because of the geographical distance, it was considered advisable that the church would not remain a part of the GMIM, so in 1965 the congr in the region were constituted into an independent church. The GPIBT has one kindergarten and one secondary school. There is no church magazine. The GPIBT considers April 4, 1965, as its birth date.
