In 1956 some local GKN(V) churches in the Netherlands and Canada decided to start a mission in an isolated and thinly populated region in southeast Irian (Upper Digul). The Gospel was first proclaimed in that region on August 10, 1958. The first baptisms took place in 1967. Due to social structures prevailing in the region, conversions were individual, not in groups, while the first converts were young people. After 1969 new posts were opened, and through local migration congr sprang up also in the coastal cities of Irian. In villages where a number of Christians were found a provisional church council was installed, and when material and spiritual progress was considered sufficient a congregation was established. In 1976 for the first time classes were formed (at the moment there are 3 classes), and after delegates of the congr had met several times in preparatory conferences, the first general synod was held in 1988. The GGRI–Irian Jaya has a theological seminary in Boma. Schools and clinics have been surrendered to the Indonesian government.
