Before World War II, the Church of Christ was one of the larger churches. Its origins go back to the first Prot missionaries who came to Japan. The first congrs were founded in 1872 by the American Presbyterian J. C. Hepburn, by S. R. Brown, and by J. H. Ballagh of the Ref tradition. The beginnings were in Yokohama. In 1877, after the union with the Presbyterian Association in Japan, the church had 623 members. By 1890 membership had increased to 10,495 in 72 congr. In the following fifty years it was the largest among the churches and exercised a leading role. It did missionary work in Korea, Taiwan, China, Hong Kong, and Singapore. In 1941 it became part of the Kyodan. After the War the majority of the congr stayed with the Kyodan, but thirty-nine congr reconstituted themselves in 1951 as the Church of Christ in Japan.

The Confession of Faith of the Church of Christ in Japan
Jesus Christ, the only begotten Son of God, whom we adore as our Lord, is true God and true man. According to the eternal decree of God he became man, and was crucified, accomplishing our redemption by offering a complete sacrifice for the sins of mankind; he rose from the dead, thereby assuring us of eternal life, and continues intercession for us until the day when our salvation shall be fully accomplished.
Whosoever believes in the work of this salvation, being elected of God, is justified in Christ, receives the unmerited forgiveness of sins, and is made a child of God.
The Holy Spirit, who with the Father and the Son is adored and worshipped, sanctifies the believer, and enables him to do the divine will.
Without the grace of the Triune God man, who is dead in sins, can not enter the kingdom of God.
The Holy Scripture of the Old and New Testaments is the word of God; and the Holy Spirit, who speaks in it, reveals the Lord Jesus Christ and is the infallible judge of faith and life.
The church is the body of Christ, the communion of saints called by God throughout all ages; on commission of the Lord she rightly proclaims the word of God, administers the sacraments, disciplines believers, and makes ready for the last day, awaiting the coming of the Lord.
Based upon the Holy Scripture the ancient church confessed the following creed. We also confess this creed with praise and thanksgiving, following the tradition of the apostolic faith:
