After having been expelled from the NHK in 1619, the Remonstrants, or Arminians, as they were also called, founded their own church in that same year. In 1621 they adopted their own confession of faith. It has always been a small but influential church. Until 1795 the Remonstrants were not officially tolerated. Many, among them Hugo Grotius (1583-1645), the “father” of international law, had to leave the country. In the 18th century the church had significant influence on Methodism and in the 19th century on theological liberalism. In 1634 the Remonstrants set up their own seminary in Amsterdam, and in 1873 it was integrated into the theological faculty of Leiden. After World War II the church adopted progres-sive policies; it is one of the few churches in the Netherlands which allows homosexuals to marry in the church. There is a congregation in Friedrichsstadt, Germany, which is affiliated with the church.
