In 1922 Archibald Patterson, an Anglican missionary, founded an indigenous and independent church in the north of the country. At the time of the struggle for liberation from the colonial regime in 1961, it became the victim of severe Portuguese repression. In the following fourteen years many church members went either underground or into exile. A new beginning became possible, however, before political independence. The church was ready in 1977 to constitute itself as the Evangelical Reformed Church of Angola. Headquarters were moved from Uige in the North to the capital Luanda. Though the church seeks to establish itself in other parts of the country (today it has congr and is well implanted in 11 of the 18 provinces of Angola), its primary strength is in the eastern part of the province of Uige.
