The first congregations of the Christian Reformed Churches of Australia (CRCA) were established in the early 1950s following migration from The Netherlands to Australia. In the last 50 years, the Reformed Churches of Australia has grown to a membership of 8,700 people, with around 46 pastors serving 49 congregations.
From the outset the CRCA was instrumental in the formation of a parent-controlled Christian school movement, which has now grown to 75 Christian Schools across the Australian continent. The CRCA also actively supports the Reformed Theological College in Geelong, Victoria. This College offers a selection of ministry-based courses ranging from general biblical studies to full training for ordained ministry.
The CRCA emphasis on the family and the covenant sees all age groups represented in worship and other church programs. It also presents a healthy tension between the "old" and the "new" in terms of worship styles, mission and ministry.
The CRCA employs a full-time home missions coordinator, a full- time youth worker, a part-time children\'s ministry specialist, and a full-time administrator. The trend towards youth workers based in local congregations is on the rise, with several positions currently active, and others opening up in the near future.
Today, the largest challenge facing the CRCA is that of applying the reformational heritage and vision to the Australian context. As they do, they will be seeking to respect and value their inheritance without being confined by it. With much of the growth over the last 50 years coming from immigration or biological sources, these questions will become more pressing in this new millennium.
