The history of this church started in 1898 when a native evangelist started to preach the Gospel among the Ngoni of Chief Mpezeni around Chipata in today’s Zambia. Stimulated by this witness, Chief Mpezeni invited missionaries to come to his country. In 1899 a group of Dutch Ref missionaries from South Africa settled in Magwero. Gradually the mission extended westward. In 1929 the first African minister, Justo Mwale, was ordained. In 1943 the church was constituted as the African Reformed Church, but leadership remained in the hands of white missionaries. The first African moderator was elected in 1961. Complete autonomy (Umwini) was granted in 1966, and two years later the church changed its name to Reformed Church in Zambia (RCZ). As a church depending on South Africa, the RCZ was in a delicate situation. In 1971 the moderator declared: “The RCZ is an indigenous church although it originated in South Africa; apartheid is not our inheritance.“ In 1989 the church threatened to sever ties with the Dutch Reformed Church if it did not change its attitude to apartheid, and in 1991 relations were suspended.
