The Associate Reformed Presbyterian Church stems from the 1782 merger in America of the Associate Presb and the Ref Presb. The Associate Synod had been formed by Scottish “Seceders” from the Church of Scotland in 1733, and the Ref Presbytery, the “Covenanters,” organized in Scotland in 1743. A southern synod broke away in 1822, first calling itself the ARPC “of the South.” This was later dropped when the northern church merged to become the UnitedPresbyterian Church of North America in 1858. The ARPC has had strong missions in Pakistan and Mexico, whose churches relate closely to this American-based denomination. Originally, like the Covenanters, the ARPC sang no hymns, but hymns became optional in 1946. The church still has most of its members in the Southeast, but it has congregations scattered across the country and a few in Canada.
