Mission work by the Reformed Church in Hungary started among Hungarian expatriates in the United States in 1904 and was organized into two classes or districts by 1912. However, after the breakup of the Austro-Hungarian Empire, these were transferred to the Presbyterian Church in the United States in 1921. Three of the original congregations refused the transfer, and they formed the Free Magyar Reformed Church in 1924. The present name was adopted in 1958 (cf. also no. 8). The church follows the Hungarian model and elects a bishop for its three classes. They hold synods yearly and a “constitutional” meeting every three years.
