The FIEC was organized officially in 1985 with five congr from the metropolitan area of San José as constituent members. All five had separated from the Asociación de Iglesias Biblicas Costarricenses (AIBC) because of the conviction that the church bears a serious responsibility for its social context and that there should be room for different theological approaches with respect to its faith and action in this area. These convictions were not shared by the leadership of the AIBC. However, the leaders of the FIEC believe that these views reflect the spirit and activity of the founders of the AIBC, Harry and Susanna Strachan and their son Kenneth, who were Presb missionaries working through the Latin American Mission. Harry, a Scotsman, and Susanna, from Ireland, arrived from Argentina in San José in 1921 and founded several ministries that have continued to the present: the Biblical Clinic (now hospital), Caravans of Good Will, the Latin American Biblical Seminary, and others. Several pastors and members of the FIEC teach or carry administrative functions in the Seminary (now a university).
